Abstract: The parasite fauna of catfish, Pimelodus pohli, from the São Francisco River Basin is presented. A total of 45 catfish from the upper São Francisco River (45°15'44"W 18°13'25"S), were examined from July 2009 to September 2011. Forty-three catfish (95.5%) were infected by at least one parasite species, with 885 parasite specimens being found, distributed across 17 species: Monogenea (Demidospermus uncusvalidus, Pavanelliella pavanellii, and Scleroductus sp.); Eucestoda (plerocercoids of Proteocephalidea); Digen… Show more

“…Except for the trematode D. oxycephala, all the other adult specimens were nematodes. The nematodes are among the most abundant endohelminths in Pimelodus spp., as reported in the studies at Mogi Iguaçu River, São Paulo State (Kohn and Fernandes 1987), Itajaí-Açu River, Santa Catarina State (Bachmann et al 2007), São Francisco River, Minas Gerais State (Sabas and Brasil-Sato 2014), and Iaco and Acre Rivers, Acre State (Negreiros et al 2018), corroborating the results of the present study.…”

“…Posteriorly it was referred in Brazil by Isaac et al (2000) in S. brasiliensis and by Sabas & Brasil-Sato (2014) in Pimelodus pohli Ribeiro & Lucena, 2006. Martins et al (2012 referred it parasitizing Leporinus reinhardti Lütken, 1875 andVasconcelos et al (2013) in Astyanax aff.…”

“…During the necropsies we found the plerocercoids forming small masses within the peritoneal cavity and attached to the mesentery of the affected fish. In the São Francisco River basin, several species of fish are parasitized by these plerocercoid larvae (BRASIL-SATO, 2003;SABAS & BRASIL-SATO, 2014;ALBUQUERQUE et al, 2016;DUARTE et al, 2016;VIEIRA-MENEZES et al, 2017). Based on these results, we suggest that M. lippincottianus harbors generalist plerocercoids.…”
