Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii that affects homeothermic animals, including humans. Felines are considered the definitive host of this parasite, while other animals act as intermediate hosts. The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies in bovines in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Serum samples (n = 427) from animals in 13 municipalities of the coastal forest/plantation region of the state were analyzed using the immunofluorescent an… Show more

“…The frequency of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies observed among the cattle slaughtered in Belém (40.6%) was much larger than the frequencies found in other parts of the world, such as 2.4% and 4.8% in India and Iran, respectively (SHARMA et al, 2008;HAMZAVI et al, 2007), 3.3% in Tanzania (SCHOONMAN et al, 2010) and 7.3% in Spain (PANADERO et al, 2010). In comparison to studies conducted in other Brazilian locations, the seroprevalence was similar to that observed in Paraná of 41.4% (DAGUER et al, 2004) and greater than the seroprevalence observed in Bahia (11.8%) (SPAGNOL et al, 2009), Rio de Janeiro (1.96%) (LUCIANO et al, 2011), Santa Catarina (29.1%) (MACEDO et al, 2012) and Pernambuco (16.6%) (GUERRA et al, 2014).…”

“…Brasil et al (2015) evaluated 136 buffaloes from 14 properties in Paraíba and found that the seropositivity was 12.5%. Guerra et al (2014) hypothesized that variations in seroprevalence worldwide could be attributed to differences in ecosystems and the results of the serological tests used.…”

“…Although the transmission of toxoplasmosis via consumption of raw or undercooked beef is still unclear, Millar et al (2008), Guerra et al (2014), andCarmo et al (2017) reported that the meat of these animals might contain viable cysts and be a source of infection for humans and domestic and carnivorous animals if consumed. This condition was confirmed by Lora et al (2007) using PCR to detect genomic material of T. gondii in bovine meat, and 48.33% of the analyzed samples were positive for the parasite.…”

“…In the present survey, the presence of antibodies was indicative of T. gondii circulation in buffalo herds in the state of Paraíba. This is a public health concern, given that in Brazil there has been an increase in the consumption of raw or undercooked beef, especially in areas with no federal inspection service (GUERRA et al, 2014).…”
