Streblidae (Diptera) on bats (Chiroptera) in an area of Atlantic Forest, state of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract: Because of the few records of Streblidae on bats, despite extensive study on these mammals in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a survey was carried out in an area of Atlantic Forest, in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, known as the Tinguá region. Thirteen species were added to the list of Streblidae in the state of Rio de Janeiro, of which two were new records for Brazil. Thirty-one species have now been reported this state.

“…In RVSMJ, the host A. lituratus associated with P. longicrus presented lower parasitological rates than those found by França et al (2013) and Lourenço et al (2014) in the Atlantic forest, indicating a lower abundance of parasitized bats and fewer ectoparasites per bat in the locality. This result can be explained by the fact that the bats of the genus Artibeus are solitary or form small harems (Rui and Graciolli 2005), and their low fidelity to shelters (Chaverri et al 2007) hindering the occurrence of high infestations in the individual (Rui and Graciolli 2005).…”

“…As regards C. perspicillata (RVSMJ), only the prevalence rates found for S. ambigua and T. joblingi were higher than those recorded by Santos et al (2009) andLourenço et al (2014) in the same biome, indicating that in this area, there is a greater abundance of parasitized bats, but a smaller ratio of ectoparasites to host and small populations of parasites. This may be related to the fact that the host C. perspicillata and the associated parasites are captured more in regions with high temperatures than in other regions such as southern Brazil (Prevedello et al 2005;Reis et al 2007).…”
