Endohelminths in Cichla piquiti(Perciformes, Cichlidae) from the Paraná River, São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: Fifty specimens of Cichla piquiti were collected from the Paraná River downstream of the Ilha Solteira Hydroelectric Power Station in Brazil and surveyed for endohelminth parasites. All fish were parasitised by at least one helminth species (overall prevalence [P] = 100%). Eight parasite taxa were present: the nematode Procamallanus (Procamallanus) peraccuratus in the intestines; third-stage larvae of the anisakids Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. in the visceral cavity, mesentery and serosa of the st… Show more

“…Genarchella genarchella is a widely distributed digenean in Characiformes and Siluriformes species from Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay (Scholz et al 1995;Kohn et al 2003;Franceschini et al 2013). As this digenean species has mollusks and Cypriniformes species as intermediate hosts, and Characiformes and Siluriformes species are definitive hosts (Martorelli 1989;Lefebvre and Poulin 2005).…”

“…In the present day, P. macrophallus and P. microscopicus are unique endohelminths of Cichla spp., having never been found in other fish species in Brazil (REGO, 1994;MACHADO et al, 2000;THATCHER, 2006;AZEVEDO et al, 2010;KOHN et al, 2011;FRANCESCHINI et al, 2013;LACERDA et al, 2013a;YAMADA;TAKEMOTO, 2013). According Guégan and Kennedy (1993), the fauna of the parasites of a species of fish is influenced from the time it is introduced into a new habitat.…”
