Abstract: Canine otoacariasis, or otodectic mange, is a common parasitic disorder of dogs' ear canals caused by the mite Otodectes cynotis. Infestation can be detected through diverse protocols of varying sensitivity. We evaluated the use of video otoscopy in comparison with conventional otoscopy and cerumen examination under a microscope for diagnosing O. cynotis in dogs. Thirty-five dogs were evaluated bilaterally for the presence of ear mites, using a veterinary otoscope (Gowlands ® ), a video otoscope (Welch Allyn ®… Show more

“…Indeed, dogs may be frequently infested by species of fleas (e.g., Ctenocephalides canis , Ctenocephalides felis felis , and Tunga penetrans ), lice (e.g., Heterodoxus spiniger and Trichodectes canis ), mites (e.g., Demodex canis , Otodectes cynotis , and Sarcoptes scabiei ) and ticks (e.g., Amblyomma aureolatum , Amblyomma ovale , and Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) [11-41]. While some flea species may be common in rural settings (e.g., T. penetrans ), C. felis felis is indeed the most common flea infesting dogs in Brazil.…”

“…The diagnosis is usually confirmed by visualization of the parasite either directly by otoscopy or indirectly after microscopic examination of collected cerumen. Handheld otoscopy allows direct observation of the parasite movements in the ear canal but not in all cases . Although video‐otoscopy may be reported to be more sensitive than conventional otoscopy in diagnosing otoacariasis, this device is not routinely available in general practice.…”
