Abstract: The aims of this study were to determine the occurrence of Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis infection in dogs in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil; and to investigate their association with hematological abnormalities. Serum samples from 196 dogs were first tested using dot-ELISA for antibodies against Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia canis. Peripheral blood samples from 199 dogs were subjected to 16S rRNA nested PCR (nPCR) for A. platys and E. canis, followed by DNA sequencing to ensure pathogen identity. A total… Show more

“…In this study, the isolates 1, 2, 3 and 4 of A. platys were clustered in one same subclade and had evolutionary homology to strains from the states of Pará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul and from the countries: Colombia and Nigeria (Fig.4) (Lasta et al 2013, Rufino et al 2013, Sousa et al 2013, Miranda & Mattar 2015.…”

“…In fact, the frequency of A. platys among dogs has already been reported to be greater in the rural than in the urban zone (Costa-Júnior et al 2013). This bacterium was also identified in the states of Pernambuco (55%) (Ramos et al 2009), Minas Gerais (13.9%) (Costa-Júnior et al 2013), Rio de Janeiro (14.8%) (Ferreira et al 2007), São Paulo (3.9%) (Dagnone et al 2009) and Rio Grande do Sul (14%) (Lasta et al 2013).…”

“…been conducted in Brazil for many years and has revealed widely variable prevalence, from 8 to 88% and from 0 to 55%, respectively (Dagnone et al 2003, Bulla et al 2004, Macieira et al 2005, Santos et al 2009, Lasta et al 2013, Rotondano et al 2015. On the other hand, few studies concern infection of natural population of R. sanguineus.…”
