Cytauxzoon felis and 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum' coinfection in a Brazilian domestic cat (Felis catus)

Abstract: Cytauxzoon felis and 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum' coinfection in a Brazilian domestic cat (Felis catus) AbstractThis article describes the first detection of Cytauxzoon felis, using molecular techniques, in a naturally infected domestic cat from Brazil, South America. Coinfection with 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum' was also found. The molecular identification of the piroplasmid species was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and sequencing analysis. A 284 pb fragment of the gene encoding… Show more

“…Recently, Cytauxzoon sp. DNA was detected in a cat co-infected with 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum' in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Maia et al, 2013). Our findings corroborate with previous studies carried on in Brazil, which strongly suggest that C. felis, or at least, an agent closely related to C. felis, circulate more often on wild felids compared to cats in our country.…”

“…Although Cytauxzoon sp. has been detected in neotropical wild felids and lions maintained in zoos in cities located in the states of São Paulo , Rio de Janeiro (Peixoto et al, 2007) and Distrito Federal , there is only a report of this parasite in domestic cats in Brazil, in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Maia et al, 2013). The present work aimed to detect the presence of species belonging to the Anaplasmataceae family, piroplasmas and Hepatozoon spp.…”

“… a Checklist of endoparasites (protozoa and helminths) affecting cats in Brazil [42,44,47,71,87,90,92,97],[129,131-148,346,349,352-356]. Doubtful records (e.g., Ascaridia galli  and Heterakis gallinarum ) [68,69] are not included.…”

“…Cats have also been found infected by vector-borne protozoa such as B. vogeli , Cytauxzoon felis , H. canis , Hepatozoon felis , L. amazonensis , L. braziliensis , and L. infantum [42,44,129,136,138-148]. Indeed, the diversity of endoparasites of cats and dogs in Brazil is impressive, but certainly underestimated, mainly because most studies carried out in this country have been based on the detection and identification of eggs and oocysts in faecal samples using ordinary coprological techniques.…”

“…This is not the first report of domestic cats with multiple vector-borne infections. Recently Maia et al (2013) [25] described the first detection of Cytauxzoon felis and Candidatus M. haemominutum coinfection in a Brazilian domestic cat in South America.…”
