Abstract: Diurnal periodicity is a phenomenon that has been observed in coccidian of Isospora parasites of passerines, which have been eliminated great number of oocysts at dusk. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of periodicity of oocysts presence in the green-winged-saltator Saltator similis, and its use in the diagnosis of coccidiosis in wild birds in captivity. A total of 220 fecal samples were collected from birds, apprehended from illegal trading and kept in quarantine in CETAS∕IBAMA, in th… Show more

“…Diclazuril can reduce the duration of oocyst excretion from 12 to 5 days (Madico et al, 1997). In a study comparing the efficacy of sulphaquinoxaline, sulfamethazine and diclazuril in green-winged saltator (Saltator similis) isosporiasis, it was concluded that sulphaquinoxaline is more effective than diclazuril, while another study in seed-finches verified the better effectiveness of diclazuril than sulphaquinoxaline (Coelho et al, 2012a, b;Coelho et al, 2013). It was demonstrated that a similar drug, toltrazuril, can effectively eliminate all intestinal stages of Isospora in the laughing thrush (Dryonastes courtoisi) (Jamriška et al, 2013).…”

“…It is possible that captivity, inadequate hygiene, and overcrowding have favored the contamination of the animals and contributed to the worsening of their state of health. Coelho et al (2013) proposed protocols based on the periodicity of oocyst shedding as a form of early identification of coccidiosis in triage centers.…”

“…The green-winged saltator, Saltator similis, is a Brazilian cardinal passerine, highly appreciated by the song, but whose populations have been decimated by illegal trade for confinement (Coelho et al 2013, IUCN 2015. Considering that prevalence and definitive treatment are still not fully elucidated, and the possibility of high rate of mortality, the aim of this study was to describe clinical and hematological abnormalities associated with atoxoplasmosis in captive S. similis from Brazil and suggest the need of preventive measures in handling these animals.…”
