Abstract: Early diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis favors prompt institution of treatment and improves the prognosis for the animal, since this disease causes mortality among dogs. Studies have shown that determining the concentration of acute-phase proteins (APPs) may contribute towards early detection of disease and aid in predicting the prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the APP profile in dogs experimentally infected with Ehrlichia canis, at the start of the infection and after treatment. It also investigated whe… Show more

“…This study focused on profiling the oxidative mechanisms and the iron metabolism in sera samples from dogs naturally infected by E. canis. Following the normal pattern of CME, infected dogs showed clinical signs such as inappetence, hyperthermia and apathy, as previously described by Munhoz et al [18]. In order to validate our study data, E. canis infection in dogs was confirmed by PCR.…”

“…Sera samples were collected from dogs naturally infected by E. canis; twenty four (24) on the acute phase of the disease (with clear clinical signs) and eighteen (18) with subclinical disease (asymptomatic). As a control group, sera samples from seventeen (17) healthy dogs were used.…”

“…The acute phase is characterized by megathrombocytosis [8]. Some of these infections could also be recent acute infections since reports on experimental infection in German shepherds using the E. canis Oklahoma strain show that the detection of anti-E. canis antibodies was possible two days post infection [27]. Other authors observed seroconversion in Beagles infected with the same Oklahoma strain, occurring between days 5 and 15 p.i.…”
