Contracaecumovale (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from Rollandia rolland Quoy & Gaimard 1824 (Aves, Podicipedidae) in Argentina

Abstract: Necropsy on 15 specimens of white-tufted grebe, Rollandia rolland, caught in the Mar Chiquita and Chascomús lagoons (Buenos Aires province), revealed the presence of Contracaecum ovale (Linstow, 1907). This nematode shows a marked specificity for podicipediform birds. The specimens were identified from morphological study on features such as cephalic and esophageal structures and caudal papillae, using both optical and scanning electron microscopy. This is the first record of C. ovale parasitizing R. rolland i… Show more

“…Infections included L4 larvae and adults, with a large size range from 11mm to 28mm. Males were smaller than females, and metrics fell within with the ranges given by Galeano & Tanzola ( 2012 ) and other references for Contracaecum ovale , including those of synonymous species (see below). Contracaecum ovale was described (as Ascaris ovalis ) from specimens recovered from Podiceps cristatus in Germany.…”

“…Indeed, Macko (1961) and Hartwich (1964) (Linstow 1907) was short on detail, and various descriptions of the species have been published since (i.e. Cram, 1927;Mozgovoi, 1953;Macko, 1961;Hartwich, 1964;Galeano & Tanzola, 2012). Those reports that gave morphometrics have greatly increased the range of measurements and interspecific variability in all features, notably the size of spicules and number of male papillae.…”
