Why is it important to correctly identify Haemonchus species?

Abstract: Parasitic gastroenteritis caused by Haemonchus spp. is a major cause of economic losses in the livestock industry because it impairs weight gain and increases mortality in cattle and small ruminants, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. The proper identification of the various species, as well as knowledge regarding the epidemiology of parasitic gastroenteritis, is essential for the establishment of sustainable strategies of parasite control. This review focuses on the use of easily applied, low-cost … Show more

“…In areas where crossinfections between sheep and cattle parasites are not significant, grazing strategies using different ruminant species have also been exploited to produce clean pastures (GIUDICI et al, 1999;ROCHA et al, 2008;BAILEY et al, 2009). In studies where H. contortus and H. placei are sympatric, the proper identification of both species is imperative in order to determine their role in parasitic gastroenteritis and the efficiency of these prophylactic strategies (AMARANTE, 2011).…”

“…In this context, nematodes, especially the genus Haemonchus, are responsible for large economic losses in livestock (URQUHART et al, 1996;AMARANTE, 2011). The conventional method for controlling such gastrointestinal parasites is to use synthetic anthelmintic drugs.…”
