Schyzocotyle acheilognathi is a fish tapeworm native to Asia but has been reported as an alien species on practically all other continents. Its invasive potential is due to its low host specificity and high adaptability to different environments, and its spread to new areas can result in economic and ecological impacts. Studies reporting this species in South America are still scarce, indicating the need to monitor its dispersion to new areas. Herein, tapeworms found in guppies, Poecilia reticulata, from an urban stream located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in April 2021 were subjected to morphological and molecular characterization. As a result, 5/13 (38.5%) of the P. reticulata specimens evaluated were infected with intestinal tapeworms. It was verified a mean intensity of infection of 7.8 (1-25) and a mean abundance of infection of 3 (0-25). The morphology of the cestodes obtained was compatible with that of S. acheilognathi. Moreover, genetic analysis based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (Cox-1) revealed 97.89-99.77% similarity to isolates of this species from different localities. The possibility that S. acheilognathi is expanding to new regions of South America is discussed.

An exhaustive literature search supplemented by a critical examination of records made it possible to present an annotated checklist of tapeworms (Cestoda) that, as adults or larvae (metacestodes), parasitize freshwater, brackish water and marine fishes, i.e. cartilaginous and bony fishes, in South America. The current knowledge of their species diversity, host associations and geographical distribution is reviewed. Taxonomic problems are discussed based on a critical evaluation of the literature and information on DNA sequences of individual taxa is provided to facilitate future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies. As expected, the current knowledge is quite uneven regarding the number of taxa and host-associations reported from the principal river basins and marine ecoregions. These differences may not only reflect the actual cestode richness but may also be due to the research effort that has been devoted to unravelling the diversity of these endoparasitic helminths in individual countries. A total of 297 valid species, 61 taxa identified to the generic level, in addition to unidentified cestodes, were recorded from 401 species of fish hosts. Among the recognized cestode orders, 13 have been recorded in South America, with the Onchoproteocephalidea displaying the highest species richness, representing c. 50% of all species diversity. The majority of records include teleost fish hosts (79%) that harbour larval and adult stages of cestodes, whereas stingrays (Myliobatiformes) exhibit the highest proportion of records (39%) among the elasmobranch hosts. Fish cestodes are ubiquitous in South America, being mostly recorded from the Warm Temperate Southeastern Pacific (WTSP; 31%) for marine hosts and the Amazon River basin (45%) for freshwater ones. The following problems were detected during the compilation of literary data: (i) unreliability of many records; (ii) poor taxonomic resolution, i.e. identification made only to the genus or even family level; (iii) doubtful host identification; Alves et al. / ZooKeys 650: 1-205 (2017) 2 and (iv) the absence of voucher specimens that would enable us to verify identification. It is thus strongly recommended to always deposit representative specimens in any type of studies, including faunal surveys and ecological studies. An analysis of the proportion of three basic types of studies, i.e. surveys, taxonomic and ecological papers, has shown a considerable increase of ecological studies over the last decade.

Objetivo. Identificar y determinar los parámetros de infección del metacestodo Parvitaenia en diferentes fases de cultivo de chame Dormitator latifrons y evaluar los daños histológicos ocasionados por este parásito. Materiales y métodos. Se revisaron 45 ejemplares, 15 en fase de pre-cría, 15 en pre-engorda y 15 en engorda para identificar el parásito mediante técnicas de parasitología convencional; y se calcularon los parámetros de infección prevalencia e intensidad promedio. Los daños tisulares fueron evaluados fijando fragmentos de hígado y procesados con la técnica de inclusión en parafina. Se evaluó la diferencia entre la intensidad por fase de cultivo mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. La longitud total, peso y factor de condición de Fulton se correlacionó con la intensidad mediante un análisis de correlación lineal. Resultados. Se encontró un total de 29151 cestodos, identificados como Parvitaenia cochlearii. La prevalencia del cestodo fue de 100 % en todas las fases de cultivo. La intensidad promedio varió de 22,4 a 1729,5 individuos y mostró diferencias significativas entre fases de cultivo (KW(2;42) = 36,34; p<0,001). La intensidad mostró una correlación positiva con la longitud total de los peces (r2= 0,45; p<0,05) y con el peso (r2= 0,38; p<0,05). Conclusiones. Este es el primer reporte de P. cochlearii en D. latifrons de cultivo. Nuestros resultados sugieren que existe una tendencia de acumulación de cestodos durante el crecimiento de los chames, siendo mayor la infección en las tallas más grandes, lo cual podría tener implicaciones negativas para el comercio.
