Detection of antibodies against Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in calves from the region of Araguaína, State of Tocantins, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies against B. bovis and B. bigemina in calves from the region of Araguaína, State of Tocantins, Brazil. In this research we used sera obtained from 506 calves, from both genders and of 8 to 24 months old, to detect antibodies by indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA-test). Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Chi-square (χ 2 ) test with Yates correction. The seroprevalence obtained was 90.5 and 91.7% for B. big… Show more

“…These results demonstrate that infection with A. marginale in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane is independent of this parameter (Table 1), a finding that is consistent with other studies (SOARES et al, 2000;SOUZA et al, 2000;TRINDADE et al, 2010). On the other hand, statistical significant difference in the prevalence of A. marginale was found among the three age groups studied (Table 1).…”

“…The association of gender with the seropositivity of the cattle to B. bigemina and B. bovis was not significantly different (p>0.05), confirming the findings of previous studies (Soares et al 2000, Trindade et al 2010.…”

“…In the micro-regions of Feira de Santana, Jequié, Ilhéus, and Vitória da Conquista (Bahia State), the average percentages of cattle serologically positive for B. bovis and B. bigemina were 97.2% and 95.0%, respectively (Araújo et al 1997). In the region known as Araguaína (Tocantins State) seroprevalence determined for B. bovis was 90.5% (Trindade et al 2010). The unstable situation found in this study may high risk of clinical manifestation of infections in this region because there is the possibility of outbreaks of babesiosis in adult animals causing high mortality rate and economic losses.…”
