Manipueira, a liquid residue obtained from the cassava industrialization, shows high toxicity to the microbial diversity. This study aimed at evaluating the potential of manipueira applied to the soil to control Meloidogyne incognita in soybean. A completely randomized design, in a 2 x 11 factorial scheme, was used, consisting of two application forms of manipueira (single and two applications), in eleven concentrations (0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, 50 %, 60 %, 70 %, 80 %, 90 % and 100 %), with five replications per treatment. Some agronomic traits and parasitism characteristics were also evaluated. The plants that received a single application of manipueira showed a gain of 100.41 % in root length, while the volume and fresh root mass showed gains of 81.52 % and 28.11 %, respectively, with the two applications. Regarding parasitism, the single application was more effective in reducing the number of juveniles in the soil and roots, where the concentrations of manipueira to kill 50 % of the nematodes were 1.65 % and 4.37 %, respectively. Thus, besides being effective in controlling M. incognita, manipueira has a positive effect on the development of soybean and may be recommended as a nematicide and also as an organic fertilizer.

The global production of cassava was estimated at ca. 303 million tons. Due to this high production, the cassava processing industry (cassava flour and starch) generates approximately ca. 0.65 kg of solid residue and ca. 25.3 l of wastewater per kg of fresh processed cassava root. The composition of the liquid effluent varies according to its origin; for example, the effluent from cassava flour production, when compared to the wastewater from the starch processing, presents a higher organic load (ca. 12 times) and total cyanide (ca. 29 times). It is worthy to highlight the toxicity of cassava residues regarding cyanide presence, which could generate disorders with acute or chronic symptoms in humans and animals. In this sense, the development of simple and low-cost eco-friendly methods for the proper treatment or reuse of cassava wastewater is a challenging, but promising path. Cassava wastewater is rich in macro-nutrients (proteins, starch, sugars) and micro-nutrients (iron, magnesium), enabling its use as a low-cost culture medium for biotechnological processes, such as the production of biosurfactants. These compounds are amphipathic molecules synthesized by living cells and can be widely used in industries as pharmaceutical agents, for microbial-enhanced oil recovery, among others. Amongst these biosurfactants, surfactin, rhamnolipids, and mannosileritritol lipids show remarkable properties such as antimicrobial, biodegradability, demulsifying and emulsifying capacity. However, the high production cost restricts the massive biosurfactant applications. Therefore, this study aims to present the state of the art and challenges in the production of biosurfactants using cassava wastewater as an alternative culture medium.

The nematode Radopholus similis is a major pest in banana plantations worldwide. This nematode is actually controlled using synthetic, toxic nematicides. Alternative control methods are therefore needed. For instance the liquid byproduct of fiber extraction from sisal (Agave sisalana) may be used as a nematicide. Here we tested the nematicidal activity of the sisal residue, fresh or fermented, on R. similis in banana plants. We measured immobility and mortality effects by nematode immersion in an aqueous solution of sisal residue for 24 and 48 h. Nematode control was also evaluated in the Grand Naine banana plants under greenhouse conditions using soil amendments of residues. We measured plant growth, pseudostem diameter, the number of leaves, and the dry weight of the aerial parts, corm and roots, as well as factors related to nematode control such as the level of damage, the population of R. similis in roots and soil, and nematode reproduction factors. Our results show that the sisal residue efficiently controlled R. similis in vitro, displaying mortality rates of 99.2 % for the fresh residue. The damage caused by R. similis on plants was similar for the treatment with the sisal residue at a concentration of 25 % and with the nematicide. This is the first report on the nematicidal effect of the sisal liquid residue on the banana burrowing nematode. This byproduct presents the potential for the development of new alternatives for nematode control, with a low-cost and lowenvironmental risk plant nematicide.
