Role of Positive Thinking and Personality Traits in Predicting Satisfaction with Nasal Surgeries

Background: Rhinoplasty is recognized as a complicated, but common procedure. Although patient satisfaction with these surgeries is less commonly discussed, it is one of the most important determinants of surgical success. This study was done to predict the patients’ satisfaction with nasal surgeries, based on their personality traits and positive thinking. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study was conducted in Shiraz, Iran, during the fall and winter of 2017. A total of 200 individuals undergoing rhinoplasty were selected, using the convenience sampling method. The Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation-Revised (ROE-R) questionnaire, Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire-Positive (ATQ-P), and Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness (NEO) personality inventory were used for data collection. The obtained results were analyzed by SPSS v. 23, using inferential statistics and stepwise regression analysis. Results: The results showed that satisfaction with nose fitness had a significant positive relationship with agreeableness and openness (P<0.01). Also, the overall satisfaction with surgery had a significant positive relationship with these personality traits, while a significant negative relationship was found with neuroticism (P<0.01). Moreover, the results showed that positive thinking and personality traits could predict 6% of changes in the overall satisfaction with surgery (P<0.001). Neuroticism showed an inverse correlation with satisfaction (P=0.001, β=-0.24). Conclusion: Regarding the relationship between satisfaction with rhinoplasty and personality traits, it was found that different personality traits are associated with different attitudes, influencing surgical outcomes, and satisfaction.

BackgroundConsidering that revision rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult plastic surgical procedures, evaluating patient satisfaction is fundamental in order to determine success and identify variables that may affect the outcomes. Our first study objective was to determine satisfaction levels in revision patients and to compare results with those obtained in primary rhinoplasty patients. Second, we sought to identify factors that may influence the degree of satisfaction.MethodsSatisfaction was evaluated in 54 revision and 54 primary rhinoplasty patients using the rhinoplasty outcome evaluation questionnaire. To identify associated factors, patients were assessed for demographic characteristics, medical history, follow-up time, reason for revision, graft usage, the severity of nasal deformity, and satisfaction with the provided care and information given before the surgery.ResultsAll revision and primary rhinoplasty patients experienced improvements in satisfaction scores. Although the improvements were higher in primary rhinoplasty patients, the levels obtained in revision patients can be considered high. We found that young and male patients tend to have less satisfaction increment after the surgery. Patients who underwent revision for aesthetic reasons had higher improvements in satisfaction scores when compared to those patients who underwent revision for a combination of aesthetic and functional reasons. The improvement in satisfaction scores in patients who were satisfied with the information given before surgery was higher.ConclusionOur data suggest that significant patient satisfaction is achieved after revision rhinoplasty and highlight the importance of the informed consent process when planning revision, especially on young and male patients.Level of evidenceIII.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s40064-016-3166-5) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Background Nasal sill is one of the components of the alar ring, affecting the esthetic outcomes of rhinoplasty; accordingly, we developed a novel technique to adjust defects in this area and compared it with the available techniques. Methods Our technique was based on creating a tunnel access to the nasal sill area through an incision made in the lower third of the columella using the open approach or through a nostril base incision in patients, who underwent alar base reduction, followed by insertion of a cartilaginous graft into the marked defect area. Results A total number of 54 patients with a defect in the nasal sill area were included in this study. Thirty-one patients underwent open rhinoplasty with the sill approach from the lower third of the columella, while 23 patients underwent rhinoplasty with a nostril base approach for nasal sill augmentation procedure. There were no reports of patient dissatisfaction, infection, bleeding, sensory dysfunction, or remaining asymmetry of the sill area. Conclusion Based on the findings of the present study, this technique can be successfully used in reconstructing the nasal sill area with minimal complications and morbidity.
