RESUMOObjetivo: Comparar e correlacionar os níveis mínimos de resposta (NMR) da audiometria infantil em campo livre e os limiares do potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico por frequência especifica (PEATE-FE) em 500 e 2000Hz em lactentes com perda auditiva. Metodologia: Estudo transversal, individual e observacional. Foram avaliados 30 lactentes entre dois e seis meses de idade com perda auditiva neurossensorial. Foram realizadas as seguintes avaliações: otorrinolaringológica, emissões otoacústicas, medidas de imitância acústica, audiometria infantil em campo livre e PEATE-FE, nas frequências de 500Hz e 2000Hz. Resultados: Houve correlação entre os limiares obtidos no PEATE-FE e na audiometria infantil em campo livre nas frequências de 500Hz e 2000Hz. Os limiares do PEATE-FE podem ser considerados estatisticamente iguais aos NMR da audiometria infantil em campo livre. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante dos resultados entre orelhas e nas diferentes faixas etárias pesquisadas. Conclusão: Houve correlação significante entre os limiares encontrados no PEATE-FE e os NMR obtidos na audiometria infantil em campo livre em lactentes de dois a seis meses de idade com perda auditiva neurossensorial. To compare and correlate the minimum response levels obtained in free field audiometry and the thresholds found in the frequency-specific brainstem auditory evoked potential to 500 and 2000Hz in infants hearing loss. Methodology: This research is characterized as a crossectional, individualy, and observational study. 30 infants aged between 2 and 6 months with sensorineural hearing loss were evaluated. The following assessments were conducted: otorhinolaryngological, otoacoustic emissions tests, acoustic impedance, frequency-specific brainstem auditory evoked potentials, free field children audiometry and frequency-specific brainstem auditory evoked potentials at 500Hz and 2000Hz. Results: A correlation was found between the thresholds obtained in frequency-specific ABR and in free field children audiometry at 500Hz and 2000Hz. There was no significant difference in the results between the ears and in different age groups. Conclusion: There was correlation between the thresholds found in frequency-specific ABR and the MRL obtained in free field audiometry in infants from two to six months with sensorineural hearing loss. Introduction: An ischemic stroke is a clinical condition that affects thousands of people worldwide. As a result of this injury, neuronal death can be observed, and in the natural course of recovery, the individual may develop sepsis. Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response that can lead the patient to death. To assess the clinical condition of a patient with this condition, the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) can be useful, since it is not an invasive procedure, it is a fast technique and it can be done at the bedside. Purpose: To assess auditory brainstem response (ABR) latency values in gerbils subjected to ischemia and sepsis. Methods: ABR values were collected from 72 adult male gerbils, which were divided into six groups: control, sepsis, ischemia, sham, ischemia with sepsis, and sham with sepsis. For the induction of sepsis, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was applied intraperitoneally in gerbils. The animals were anesthetized with a ketamine/xylazine combination before collection; their ABR were collected before any procedure (base collection), after ischemia, and 24 hours after the application of LPS. The absolute latency of wave IV was evaluated, and the values were compared between groups. Results: There were significant differences in the groups submitted to sepsis in the latency value of wave IV in relation with the other groups. Conclusion: ABR was sensitive to sepsis with the increase in latency of wave IV during the development of the disease in the experimental model used.

Impact of Gestational Age on Neonatal Hearing Screening in Vaginally-Born Late-Preterm and Early-Term Infants

Background: Late-preterm and early-term (LP-ET) infants, defined herein as 35⁰-37⁶ weeks' gestation, often fail on 1st otoacoustic emissions (OAE) test. Hypothesis: LP-ET infants fail more than term infants (38⁰-42 weeks' gestation) on the 1st OAE test. Aim: To evaluate the effect of gestational age on the 1st OAE test. Methods: We studied 1,572 vaginally-delivered (VD) infants ≥35 weeks' gestation (1.1.2011-30.9.2011). Perinatal and neonatal variables and results of OAE tests were recorded. Results: LP-ET infants, compared to full-term infants, had a significantly 2-fold higher need for repeated hearing tests: 80.2 versus 43.3 tests/1,000 neonates, respectively (p = 0.026). Univariate analysis showed that late prematurity and age at 1st OAE were significantly associated with failure on 1st OAE. At age 24-42 h, failure on 1st OAE was 2-fold higher in the LP-ET infants than in full-term infants: 9.4 versus 4.7% (p = 0.02). Risk for failure on 1st OAE was age-dependent: 9-fold higher when 1st OAE was performed at 24-42 h of age (5.3%) versus 0.6% after age 42 h. Multivariate analysis showed that variables that were independently significantly associated with failure on 1st OAE included late prematurity (OR 2.0 (1.1-3.7)) and age at 1st OAE (OR 9.2 (1.2-70.7)). Conclusions: Compared to term infants, VD LP-ET infants had 2-fold higher rates of failure on 1st OAE (up to 42 h of life) and needed repeated hearing tests. Failure rates after 42 h become negligible in both groups. In VD LP-ET infants, 1st OAE is better performed after 42 h of age.
