Abstract: Bone tissue lesions can be caused by congenital and acquired factors, and result in nasal deformities with cosmetic and functional repercussion. Surgical treatment in these cases frequently requires complex reconstructions and the use of biomaterials. The polyurethane derived from castor beans (Ricinus communis) has a favorable formulation in terms of ease of processing, flexibility, no emission of toxic vapors and low cost. Nonetheless, despite favorable results, studies about the use of castor beam polymer (… Show more

“…This article is in accordance with the fundamentals of the several studies 1,6,15,16 that conclude for a successful reconstruction of the temporoparietal defect. In a follow-up evaluation, 1 year after the surgery, there was no extrusion of the prosthesis with prosthetic-bone interface, and also there was no infection.…”

“…Currently, all eyes are directed toward the use of the castor oil polymer as an option for these reconstructions. Among the factors that influence the expectations for the use of this material, the following stand out: (1) easily obtainable; (2) low cost1256; (3) does not release toxic radicals13; (4) no inflammatory reaction14; (5) reduced risk of infection; (6) bactericidal effect114; (7) biocompatible156; and (8) osteoconductive 15614…”

“…In a study of bone repair in the nasal dorsum of capuchin monkeys with castor beans biopolymer the presence of inflammatory cells and foreign body was not found after 270 days of surgery 36 . However, this fact can be explained by the longer time compared to ours which was no longer than 180 days.…”
