Corn (Zea mays) is one of the world's main agricultural crops, and Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is its most important pest. In order to find natural controlling alternatives, this study aimed to determine the effect of plant oils on the feeding preference of first-and second-instar caterpillars. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 6 x 5 factorial combination (turmeric, clove, palmarosa, tea tree, common juniper, and neem oils) at five concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 µL mL-1), plus a control consisting of acetone 100.0%, with five replicates per treatment. Twenty-five-day-old corn leaf sections received the corresponding treatments in addition to the control and were deposited along orthogonal axes in an arena arranged in Petri dishes. Ten 1 st instar caterpillars were released at the center of the plates, and results were obtained after 8h and 24h from the release, based on the number of caterpillars found on each treatment. For 1 st instar caterpillars, the best results were observed for clove and palmarosa, which negatively influenced caterpillar feeding activity in both evaluation periods, followed by turmeric oil, which showed the same effectiveness in the last period only. For second-instar caterpillars, the best effects were observed for neem, turmeric, palmarosa, and clove oil in the first evaluation period. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the first three oils was maintained in the second evaluation period. These results emphasize the potential capability of plant oils when used in management programs against this pest, in which the oils of turmeric, clove and palmarosa showing the best controlling potential of this pest from the lowest concentration corresponding to 25 µL mL-1 .

Inseticidal Oils From Amazon Plants in Control of Fall Armyworm

-The potential insecticidal of oils from southwestern Amazon plants against Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was investigated. Initial bioassays were performed with undiluted oils from 11 plant species. The efficacy of the oils was evaluated against eggs and third-instar caterpillars of S. frugiperda. The oils of Copaifera sp. (Leguminosae), Orbignya phalerata (Arecaceae), and Carapa guianensis (Meliaceae) displayed a high efficacy against the caterpillars and were used in subsequent concentration-response bioassays, at concentrations established through preliminary tests. The highest nonlethal concentrations of oils and the lowest lethal concentrations were calculated. A completely randomized design was adopted in both bioassays. The LC 50 of the oils varied from 7.50 to 60.84% (v/v). Copaifera sp. oil had the highest toxicity and was 6.84-fold more toxic than O. phalerata oil and 8.11-fold more toxic than Carapa guianensis oil. In general, oils from Copaifera sp., O. phalerata, and Carapa guianensis were effective in controlling S. frugiperda caterpillars under laboratory conditions, and are good candidates for use in integrated management programs of corn pests.

Hermann Levi's shame and Parsifal's guilt: A critique of essentialism in biography and criticism

Two dissimilar subjects – Hermann Levi (1839–1900), a Jewish Wagnerian who conducted the Bayreuth première of Parsifal, and Parsifal itself – can be seen in a critical discourse that binds them together in a paradoxical relationship. In accounts of both Levi and the opera he conducted, certain historians and critics have made a point of stripping away a supposed veneer of aesthetic deception in order to expose the raw underbelly of historical truth. In these revisionist readings, Levi's enthusiasm for Wagner and his music amounts to a shameful form of Jewish ‘self-hatred’, while Parsifal, far from espousing a message of compassion and redemption, propagates ideas of an solidarity and racial supremacy. To advance these arguments is tantamount to claiming that moral and psychological categories such as shame and guilt are appropriate ways to describe a musician's life or the historical legacy of an opera; and these are views I find difficult to share. The slogan in my title should thus be understood as an ironic commentary, as well as a call to formulate the questions in a new way. Although I can only sketch the outlines of an alternative approach, I will suggest that critical accounts shaming Hermann Levi for his Wagnerism, and damning Parsifal for its anti-Semitism, are cut from the same cloth; they need to be revalued by a musicology that traffics in both an aesthetic understanding of art works and a critical assessment of the cultural framework in which this understanding is produced.
