The hammock: a reservoir of allergens

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:Asthma affects approximately 10% of the world's population. Sensitization to allergens is an important risk factor, and exposure to allergens is associated with disease severity.METHODS:We performed skin tests to evaluate allergen sensitization to mites, cockroaches, cats, dogs, and molds in 73 asthmatic patients. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay was used to assay the mite and cockroach allergens found in dust from the bedding, hammocks, bedroom floors, living rooms, and kitchens of 29 patients a… Show more

“…The majority of the homes from mite allergic patients with asthma and/or rhinitis presented concentrations of group 1 allergens >10 μg/g of dust in at least one site . In the city of Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil, high levels of Der p 1 were found in hammocks (commonly used for sleeping all night long in this part of the country), and beds of homes of patients with asthma (mean levels 5.7–20.4 μg/g of dust), with very low levels of Der f 1 . Differences in climate, housing conditions, or lifestyle may account for the variation in the profile of allergen distribution in different cities, and the implication is that measurements of both Der p 1 and Der f 1 allergens should be performed when studying environmental exposure to mites in Brazil.…”
