This systematic review aims to summarize the effects of wearing different types of wetsuits and swimsuits in front crawl swimming performance and physiological- and biomechanical-related variables. The Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming databases were searched from inception to 25th March 2022. From the 1398 studies initially found, 26 studies were included in the review. The quality assessment and inter-rater reliability between researchers were conducted. The full body was the most studied wetsuit, with its use allowing 3.2–12.9% velocity increments in distances ranging from 25 to 1500 m, in incremental tests, in 5 and 30 min continuous swimming and in open water events. The sleeveless long vs. the full-body wetsuit led to a 400–800 m performance enhancement. Higher stroke rate, stroke length and stroke index were observed while using three different covered body part wetsuits vs. a regular swimsuit, with a lower energy cost being observed when swimming with the full-body wetsuit compared to a swimsuit. These findings provide useful information for coaches, swimmers and triathletes about the full-body and sleeveless long/short wetsuit use, since these three wetsuits allow improving swimming performance in different distances in diverse aquatic environments.

Epilepsy is characterized by the recurrence of epileptic seizures that affect secondary physiological changes in the patient. This leads to a series of adverse events in the manifestation of convulsions in an uncontrolled environment and without medical help, resulting in risk to the patient, especially in people with refractory epilepsy where modern pharmacology is not able to control seizures. The traditional methods of detection based on wired hospital monitoring systems are not suitable for the detection of long-term monitoring in outdoors. For these reasons, this paper proposes a system that can detect generalized tonic-clonic seizures on patients to alert family members or medical personnel for prompt assistance, based on a wearable device (glove), a mobile application and a Support Vector Machine classifier deployed in a system based on cloud computing. In the proposed approach we use Accelerometry (ACC), Electromyography (ECG) as measurement signals for the development of the glove, a machine learning algorithm (SVM) is used to discriminate between simulated tonic-clonic seizures and non-seizure activities that may be confused with convulsions. In this paper, the high level architecture of the system and its implementation based on Cloud Computing are described. Considering the traditional methods of measurement, the detection system proposed in this paper could mean an alternative solution that allows a prompt response and assistance that could be lifesaving in many situations.

Passive Drag Reduction Using Full-Body Swimsuits

This study aimed to analyze whether using full-body swimsuits affects the swimmer's body alignment and to what extent changes in the body position are responsible of the passive drag (Dp) reduction experienced by the swimmers when using these swimsuits. Fourteen swimmers performed 20-m towing trials using a full-body synthetic rubber swimsuit, a full-body textile swimsuit, a traditional brief swimsuit, and a traditional brief swimsuit with a pull buoy. In all trials, the speed-specific drag (k = Dp per v), the trunk incline (TI), and the lower limbs incline (LI) were determined. In comparison with both conditions in which a full-body swimsuit was not used, k was significantly lower when using the rubber swimsuit (-8.4 and -12.2% vs. the brief swimsuit with and without pull bouy, respectively), and the textile swimsuit (-6.9 and -10.8% vs. the brief swimsuit with and without pull bouy, respectively). No differences in TI were observed among conditions, whereas LI was significantly higher when using the rubber swimsuit or the brief swimsuit with pull buoy than when using the traditional brief swimsuit. A linear mixed model showed that k can be reduced by increasing LI (that is lifting the lower limbs), by decreasing TI (that is keeping the trunk more horizontal), and by using either the rubber or textile full-body swimsuit rather than the traditional brief swimsuit. In conclusion, full-body swimsuits involve a reduction of a swimmer's passive drag caused by intrinsic properties related to the "material composition" of the swimsuits and also influenced by changes in the swimmer's body position.
