In vitro antifungal susceptibility of Candida spp. isolates from patients with chronic periodontitis and from control patients

Abstract: Superinfection by Candida can be refractory to conventional periodontal treatments in specific situations, such as in immunocompromised patients. In these cases, the systemic therapy with antifungal drugs could be indicated. The aim of this study was to analyse antifungal susceptibility of Candida spp. strains isolated from chronic periodontitis patients and from control individuals. A total of 39 C. albicans isolates, 9 C. tropicalis, 2 C. glabrata and 5 Candida spp. from control individuals and 30 C. albican… Show more

“…Neste estudo observou-se, também, uma elevada prevalência dessa espécie, o que vem a corroborar com a literatura (Oliveira et al, 1998;Ito et al, 2004;Menezes et al, 2006). É de grande importância observar a ação farmacológica clínica e laboratorial da Uncaria tomentosa sobre várias espécies de Candida.…”

“…Candida genus yeasts are normally present in the human oral microbiota and are considered the only fungal species resident in the human oral cavity (Ito et al, 2004). Confirmation of the diagnosis of Candidaassociated denture stomatitis could be made through a culture from both the denture and the palatal mucosal surface to rule out a purely mechanical irritation caused by the denture.…”
