Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of nested polymerase chain reaction (NPCR) with that of cultures in the detection of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in pulmonary and extrapulmonary specimens. METHODS: We analyzed 20 and 78 pulmonary and extrapulmonary specimens, respectively, of 67 hospitalized patients suspected of having tuberculosis. An automated microbial system was used for the identification of Mycobacterium spp. cultures, and M. tuberculosis IS6110 was used as the target sequence in the NPC… Show more

“…Pulmonary diseases are common and serious complications (23) and the main cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals infected with HIV-1(9) (23) (24) . Despite regional differences, P. jiroveci pneumonia is the most frequent OI among HIV-seropositive individuals and is the most common clinical manifestation (7) (9) .…”

“…TB is the main cause of morbidity and mortality among HIV-seropositive individuals at a rate of one-third of deaths among AIDS patients. Immunological suppression caused by HIV increases the risk of latent TB infection progress to active TB (24) (25) (26) . According to the World Health Organization, 8.8 to 9.2 million TB cases were reported in 2010, and 1.2 million of these cases were TB/HIV co-infections, which represents a challenge for public health programs.…”

“…According to the (World Health Organization, 2014), Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) has infected nearly one-third of the world's population, and TB remains as one of the top ten leading cause of death in the world. Although the lung remains the common site of TB infection, there are increasing reports of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) from all over the world, showing the potential spread capacity of M. tuberculosis (MTB) in many organs in the body (Hillemann et al, 2011; da Cruz Furini et al, 2013). EPTB comprises about 15–20% of TB cases and can comprise up to 50% of TB cases in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals (Mehta et al, 2012).…”

“…The examination of M. tuberculosis by culture tests remains the gold standard test for diagnostic confirmation 4,10 . However, the diagnostic sensitivity of conventional exams is compromised in paucibacillary patients, frequently resulting in a false negative outcome 11,12 .…”
