Reproduction of Pimelodus maculatus(Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in three section of Grande River basin, downstream Porto Colombia dam, south-eastern Brazil

Abstract: The alterations to the hydrologic regime downstream from hydroelectric dams may cause an impact on the reproductive success of fishes. This study aimed to analyse the influence of the physical and chemical parameters of the water of the Grande and Pardo Rivers on gonadal maturation, oocyte diameter, follicular atresia and biological indices of Pimelodus maculatus collected from three river sections: Grande River, downstream from the Porto Colômbia dam (S1), Grande River, downstream from the confluence with the… Show more

“…Sexual dimorphism was found in P. hemioliopterus, and has also been recorded in other pimelodids (Paschoalini et al, 2013;Suzuki et al, 2013;Barzotto et al, 2017). While the length did not vary between sexes, the female P. hemioliopterus were heavier than the males, presumably due to their greater energetic investment in the reproductive process, in particular, the production of eggs (Bromley, 2003;Prudente et al, 2014;Barneche et al, 2018).…”

“…This plasticity is capable of providing knowledge about the behavior of a particular species (Tondato et al, 2012(Tondato et al, , 2014. In Neotropical region, studies that quantify life history traits of fishes are concentrated mainly in the medium and large-sized species, which present commercial interest and are targets of fishing (Mateus and Penha, 2007;Arantes et al, 2011;Paschoalini et al, 2013). Recently, however, studies have analyzed population and reproductive traits of small species in different environments (Cunha et al, 2007;Tondato et al, 2014;Normando et al, 2014;Almeida-Silva and Mazzoni, 2014;Súarez et al, 2017), showing a high phenotypic plasticity in response to spatio-temporal variations (Mérona et al, 2009;Olden and Kennard, 2010).…”
