Glanidium botocudo, a new species from the rio Doce and rio Mucuri, Minas Gerais, Brazil (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) with comments on taxonomic position of Glanidium bockmanni Sarmento-Soares & Buckup

Abstract: 1Glanidium botocudo, new species, is described from the tributaries to the upper rio Doce and Mucuri, eastern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. It represents the northernmost record of a centromochlin catfish from the coastal rivers of the Northeastern Atlantic Forest. “…There are four species that should be carefully treated, this is due to the small sample size and/or small R 2 value (<0.95): A. lacustris , G. botocudo , H. wheatlandii and P. vetula . We choose to add these species, once they are rarity, endemic and/or lack of LWR data (Vieira, Alves, & Santos, ; Sarmento‐Soares & Martins‐Pinheiro, ; Pereira, Pablo, & Reis, ; Froese & Pauly, ).…”

“…Two species were more recently described in Centromochlus , Centromochlus macracanthus Soares‐Porto 2000 and Centromochlus meridionalis Sarmento‐Soares, Cabeceira, Carvalho, Zuanon & Akama 2013. In addition, two species were recently transferred to Centromochlus : Glanidium bockmanni Sarmento‐Soares & Buckup 2005 (Sarmento‐Soares & Martins‐Pinheiro, ) and Tatia simplex Mees 1974 (Sarmento‐Soares & Birindelli, ). Currently, a total of 13 species are considered valid in Centromochlus ; the type species of the genus, Centromochlus megalops , is considered as a species inquirendae (Ferraris, ).…”
