Abstract: This study assesses the change in fish exploitation patterns of the sábalo fisheries of the lower Paraná River basin based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators. From historical catch records, we recorded a shift from a lightly and moderate exploited status before 2001 to a heavily exploited one, as a result of the development of sábalo exports from 2001 onwards.Channel and floodplain connectivity indices demonstrated that the Paraná exhibited highly favorable hydrological conditions between 1972… Show more

“…When migratory routes are blocked, migrants spend substantial time in tailraces exposed to higher risk of mortality (Suzuki, Dunham, Silva, Alves, & Pompeu, 2016), or are forced to migrate laterally to substandard habitats (M. C. Makrakis et al, 2012). These cumulative effects of impacts imposed by dams imperil fisheries, especially those for large fish species of high commercial value (Baigún, Minotti, & Oldani, 2013).…”

“…However, there is increasing evidence that fishing effort is beyond sustainable levels in many areas of the basin. This evidence includes a decline in the abundance of large predatory fishes (de Resende 2003;Baigún and Oldani 2006;Quirós et al 2007), a decrease in both mean and maximum size of the main target species, an excessive exploitation level (the catch exceeds three times the maximum sustainable yield in some years) (Baigún and Oldani 2006;Baigún et al 2013), and an overcapacity of the fishing industry (Peteán and Cappato 2006). To what extent the exposure of P. brachyura to this high fishing pressure will result in a negative effect on its population (s) will be determined by the species' sensitivity to fishing mortality.…”

“…Conflicts in freshwater fisheries are commonplace, as there are different objectives and priorities among user groups even in the same fishery or basin (Welcomme 2016). Petrere et al 2004;Soria & Rodr ıguez 2008;Baig un et al 2013). This approach assumes centralised management agencies, with enforcement of topdown regulations at species or stock level, which are focused on limiting mesh size, minimum length of catch, closed seasons or places and access.…”

“…This top-down approach, however, is not effective in maintaining smallscale fisheries at sustainable levels on a long-term basis due to its rigid application, and has been blamed for the deterioration of subsistence fisheries in many South American large rivers (e.g. Petrere et al 2004;Soria & Rodr ıguez 2008;Baig un et al 2013). Legal measures should go beyond fisheries norms and incorporate social, economic, ecological and institutional criteria.…”
