Abstract: In this study, phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses of populations identified as Hypostomus strigaticeps from the upper Paraná River basin were conducted in order to test whether these different populations comprises cryptic species or structured populations and to assess their genetic variability. The sequences of the mitochondrial DNA ATP sintetase (subunits 6/8) of 27 specimens from 10 populations (one from Mogi-Guaçu River, five from Paranapanema River, three from Tietê River and one from Peixe River)… Show more

“…strigaticeps from the Atlântico Stream was correlated and shown to be similar to the population type from the Piracicaba River by a molecular study. 24 The large heterochromatic block present in pair 22 is also shared by other populations; however, there is an increase in the heterochromatin amount in populations from the Paraná and Iguassu rivers at an equivalent position on pairs 23 and 24. Furthermore, the size variations between homologues of pair 24, evidenced by Giemsa staining and C-banding, also characterize interpopulation chromosomal polymorphism.…”

“…24 However, it is clear that there is interpopulational variation, mainly related to heterochromatin distribution. Due to the high cytogenetic variability observed in Hypostomus, the diversity of these segments shows that the evolutionary processes acted on the differentiation of these populations.…”

“…For computational reasons, the dataset was reduced to 57 haplotypes selected by DNAsp (Librado & Rozas, 2009) covering all the haplotypes of H. ancistroides and those of the outgroup species. We used a constant evolutionary rate of 1.3%/Ma, reportedly consistent for ATPase 6 and 8 in fishes (Bermingham et al, 1997) and previously employed for Neotropical siluriforms (Perdices et al, 2002;Borba et al, 2013). Calibration was enforced in a normal clock rate distribution prior with 1.3EÀ8 corresponding to the above rate as the initial and mean value, and 1.0EÀ11 as standard deviation.…”

“…Hypostomus represents the most diverse genus within this family (Weber, 2003;Hollanda Carvalho et al, 2010;Borba et al, 2013). The species of this genus live frequently in rapid flowing rivers and display a benthonic habit near to stony bottoms (Garavello and Garavello, 2004).…”
