Cytogenetic and molecular markers reveal the complexity of the genus Piabina Reinhardt, 1867 (Characiformes: Characidae)

Abstract: Cytogenetic and molecular analyses were carried out in fish representative of the genus Piabina. This study specifically involved the species P. argentea and P. anhembi collected from areas of the Paranapanema and Tietê River basins, Brazil. Our findings suggest that fish classified as Piabina argentea in the Paranapanema and Tietê Rivers may represent more than one species. The samples analyzed differed by cytogenetic particularities and molecular analyses using partial sequences of the genes COI and CytB as … Show more

“…Indeed, even though some genera of Characidae share single NORs, a basal condition in teleosteans (Gornung, 2013), as reported in Tetragonopterus Cuvier (Alberdi & Fenocchio, 1997), Moenkhausia Eigenmann (Castro & Júlio Júnior, 2002), Bryconamericus Eigenmann (Marques et al, 2003) and Piabina Reinhardt (Pazian et al, 2012), most species in this family present multiple NORs (Kavalco & Moreira Filho, 2003).…”

“…The authors suggested that the development of geographic barriers resulting from the formation of the Serra do Mar, resulted in a pattern of allopatric speciation [45]. Two surveys analyzing Piabina argentea from the Upper Paraná and São Francisco River basins with molecular and cytogenetic tools showed that the nominal species comprises a species complex with six distinct putative species [18,19]. Interestingly, this species shows a similar geographic distribution to K. moenkhausii and is a similar small Neotropical fish [46].…”

“…Indeed, some recent studies have shown that many widely distributed species are actually cases of cryptic species complexes which had gone unrecognized [18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…Cytogenetic information is not available for Spintherobolus and in species of Clade A (Guimarães et al 1995, Krinski et al 2008, Pazian et al 2012, Piscor et al 2013) and Clade B (Martins-Santos and Tavares 1986, Souza et al 1995, Alberdi and Fenocchio 1997, Mariguela et al 2011) karyotypes do not show the big metacentric pair observed in Rhoadsia altipinna . On the contrary, all the Characidae species belonging to Clade C are characterized by the presence of the first large metacentric chromosome pair as shown by many reports on Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 (Carvalho et al 2002), Oligosarcus Günther, 1864 (Shuhei et al 2007), Hollandichthys Eigenmann, 1910 (Carvalho et al 2002), Hemigrammus Gill, 1858 (Arefjev 1990), Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903 (Foresti et al 1989), Hyphessobrycon Durbin, 1908 (Arefjev 1990, Carvalho et al 2002, Mendes et al 2011), among others.…”
