Spawning of migratory fish species between two reservoirs of the upper Uruguay River, Brazil

Abstract: This study investigated the migratory fish spawning within the reservoirs of the Machadinho and Itá dams (upper Uruguay River, Brazil) and its relationship to environmental variables. Sampling was conducted in the lotic region of the river in two sites between the dams' reservoirs: Uruguay (main river) and Ligeiro (tributary). Sampling included nine consecutive reproductive periods (RP) spanning the period from 2001 to 2010 and was conducted at night on the water surface using cylindrical-conical plankton nets… Show more

“…Recruitment success depends on offspring growth and survival. Reynalte-Tataje et al (2012) recorded the presence of eggs of large migratory species in the upper areas of a reservoir on the Uruguay River, although larvae and juveniles were not found in the samples. Similar patterns may occur with other migratory species.…”

“…Larvae of this species in more advanced stages (flexion and postflexion) were only verified in the pool environment, indicating that more developed larvae tend to group in places with lentic characteristics. Previously, Reynalte-Tataje et al (2012c) have reported the occurrence of eggs of migratory fish in the upper Uruguay River under the direct influence of dams but not in the region of the Peixe River. These recent findings indicate not only that migratory fish are finding adequate sites for their spawning but also that certain larvae from this group may be using environments found in the tributary rivers to develop.…”

“…Several studies have been conducted to assess the impact of dams on fish populations in the major river basins of Brazil (Agostinho et al, 2004b;Fernandes et al, 2009;HermesSilva et al, 2009;Gubiani et al, 2010;Reynalte-Tataje et al, 2012a), although they did not address the influence of these dams on fish recruitment.…”
