Major changes to local river habitats, after impoundment, are expected to restrict the reproductive activity of fishes with migratory strategies, although the changes are not expected to have relevant effects on fishes with other strategies. The reproductive activity of fishes with different reproductive strategies was evaluated along a longitudinal gradient before, and after, the formation of a reservoir on the Tocantins River (Tocantins State, Brazil). Samples were collected at six sites distributed along 80‐km stretch of the reservoir (R1 to R6 in the upstream–downstream direction) before and after the impoundment. The highest mean values of the reproductive activity index (RAI), considering all species in the river phase, were recorded for the intermediate segments (R4). The reproductive activity was classified as intense at the two sites located further upstream (R2 and R1). The highest mean RAI value after impoundment was observed for the site further upstream (R1). The reproductive activity was classified as intense, however, at every site, except for R6. Regardless of the reproductive strategy, mean RAI values were higher in this phase at site R1, particularly for long‐distance migratory species (LDM). The most lacustrine area (R6) was only relevant for the group of species with parental care. For non‐long‐distance migratory species, without parental care, the reproductive activity was intense at every site, except for R6. Overall, after the impoundment, the fish species tended to seek more lotic environments to spawn, including the riverine zone of the reservoir and side tributaries, regardless of the reproductive strategy. The results of this study provide evidence that impoundments affect the reproduction of the fish, independent of the reproductive strategy, although the intensity of the effect is different for each group.

This study aimed to evaluate the importance of two environments situated in the main channel of the Peixe River (a tributary of the upper Uruguay River) on fish reproduction and initial growth. Ichthyoplankton, macrozooplankton, and zoobenthos collections were taken on a monthly basis from October 2011 to March 2012, sampling a rapids and a pool environment. The instrument used for the capture of the ichthyoplankton in both environments was a light trap. In total, 795 eggs and 274 larvae were captured. The species that presented higher abundance and occurrence frequency out of the total captured in both environments were Leporinus obtusidens, Bryconamericus iheringii, and Bryconamericus stramineus. The evaluation of the feeding activity reveals a major repletion degree of the larvae in more advanced stages in the pool. The pool environment presented a higher abundance of larvae in more advanced development stages. We conclude that the channel of the Peixe River is important for the reproduction and initial growth of fish and that each river environment seems to fulfill a different role in the life cycle of the ichthyoplankton community.Este trabalho avaliou a importância de dois ambientes situados no canal principal do rio do Peixe (afluente do alto rio Uruguai) na reprodução e crescimento inicial dos peixes. As coletas de ictioplâncton, macrozooplâncton e zoobentos foram realizadas mensalmente no período de outubro de 2011 a março de 2012, amostrando um ambiente de corredeira e um ambiente de poço. O instrumento utilizado para a captura do ictioplâncton nos dois ambientes foi a armadilha luminosa. No total, foram capturados 795 ovos e 274 larvas. As espécies que apresentaram maior abundância e frequência de ocorrência do total capturado nos dois ambientes foram Leporinus obtusidens, Bryconamericus iheringii e Bryconamericus stramineus. A avaliação da atividade alimentar revela um maior grau de repleção das larvas em estágios mais avançados no ambiente de poço. O ambiente de poço apresentou uma maior abundância de larvas nos estágios mais avançados de desenvolvimento. Conclui-se que o canal do rio do Peixe é importante para a reprodução e crescimento inicial de peixes e que cada ambiente do rio parece cumprir um papel diferente no ciclo de vida da comunidade ictioplanctônica.

The construction of hydroelectric power plants has many social and environmental impacts. Among them, the impacts on fish communities, which habitats are drastically modified by dams, with consequences across the ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the influence of water level (WL) variations in the reservoirs of the Itá and Machadinho hydroelectric plants on the recruitment of fish species from the upper Uruguay River in southern Brazil. The data analyzed resulted from the WL variation produced exclusively by the hydroelectric plants generation and were collected between the years 2001 and 2012. The results showed significant correlations between the abundance of juvenile fish and the hydrological parameters only for some reproductive guilds. The species that spawn in nests showed, in general, a clear preference for the stability in the WL of the reservoirs, while the species that spawn in macrophytes or that release demersal eggs showed no significant correlation between the abundance of juvenile fish and hydrological parameters. A divergence of results between the two reservoirs was observed between the species that release semi-dense eggs; a positive correlation with a more stable WL was only observed in the Machadinho reservoir. This result can be driven by a wider range of WL variation in Machadinho reservoir.Keywords: Hydrological Parameters, Itá, Juveniles, Machadinho, Reproduction, Uruguay River.A construção de usinas hidrelétricas implica em diversos impactos sociais e ambientais. Dentre esses, o impacto causado sobre a comunidade de peixes, cujos habitats são drasticamente modificados pelas barragens, causam consequências em todo o ecossistema. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da variação dos níveis de água dos reservatórios das usinas hidrelétricas de Itá e Machadinho sobre o recrutamento das espécies de peixes do alto rio Uruguai, sul do Brasil. Os dados analisados resultaram da variação de nível de água decorrente exclusivamente da operação da usina e foram coletados entre os anos de 2001 e 2012. Os resultados mostraram correlações significativas entre a abundância dos juvenis de peixes e os parâmetros hidrológicos apenas para determinadas guildas reprodutivas. As espécies que desovam em ninhos mostraram, em geral, uma clara preferência pela estabilidade do nível de água dos reservatórios, enquanto que as espécies que desovam em macrófitas ou que liberam ovos demersais não mostraram correlação significativa entre a abundância de juvenis com os parâmetros hidrológicos. Uma divergência de resultados entre os dois reservatórios foi observada entre as espécies que liberam ovos semi-densos, onde apenas no reservatório de Machadinho houve correlação positiva com a maior estabilidade do nível de água. Esse resultado pode ser motivado pela maior amplitude de variação do nível de água no reservatório de Machadinho quando comparado com o de Itá.
