Culverts in paved roads as suitable passages for Neotropical fish species

Abstract: Improperly installed or poorly maintained culverts can pose a serious threat to fish by disrupting their habitat and endangering spawning success. Road culverts that are not designed for fish passage frequently can become obstacles. This can be especially problematic for migratory species, but can lead to fragmentation of resident populations as well. This study evaluated 40 culverts of 29 sites within a 25-km radius from Toledo city, Paraná State, southern Brazil, with respect to their likely effects on movem… Show more

“…A densidade de estradas na bacia, a densidade cruzamentos com riachos na rede hidrográfica (road crossings) (Makrakis et al 2012) ou a densidade de barragens também são atributos antrópicos importantes para descrever unidades espaciais de análise (Mello et al 2020). Além disso, o refinamento da informação sobre ação humana é possível em várias situações (Yates et al 2019) dependendo dos mapeamentos disponíveis.…”

“…Increased fine sedimentation may smother resting or feeding habitat and affect hunting ability of visual predators . Increased nutrient loads that may drive metabolic activity and decrease dissolved oxygen concentrations (Weijters, Janse, Alkemade, & Verhoeven, 2009) Connectivity loss that hinders movement of migrants (Makrakis, Castro-Santos, Makrakis, Wagner, & Adames, 2012) Bioturbation of bottom sediment, predation on small-bodied individuals, competition for resources. Possible indicator for other disturbance(s) (e.g.…”

“…Worldwide, culvert design for passage of non-salmonid species is gaining attention (e.g. Neotropical fish in Brazil [Makrakis et al, 2012] and inanga [Galaxius maculatus] in New Zealand [Franklin and Bartels, 2012]). In Europe, providing and maintaining overall ecological connectivity is a key component of the Water Framework Directive (EC, 2000), but mitigating for the impact of a high density of culverts on multiple species has not been widely considered.…”
