Abstract: The present study analyzed the length-weight relationship and some aspects of the reproductive biology of Anableps anableps from the mouth of the Maracanã River, in the Brazilian state of Pará. The specimens were collected using two 30 m-long gillnets with 15 and 20 mm mesh size, as well as a 1 m-diameter hand net with a 10 mm mesh. A total of 865 specimens were collected, from which an adult sex ratio of 2.12 females per male was recorded (χ² = 13.07; p<0.05). Females presented positively allometric growth… Show more

“…The GSI considers a proportion of the gonadal and total body weight and is generally used to determine the breeding season of a species (e.g., Oliveira, Fontoura, & Montag, 2011). However, it can also be used as proxy of sexual maturity and therefore another way to determine maturational stages by length class (Fontoura et al, 2009).…”

“…Although this general methodology is an interesting tool to describe the growth pattern for each specific stanza, as in Bervian et al (2006), Fontoura et al (2010 and Oliveira et al (2011), it sets the potential trap of achieving a good statistical result with little biological meaning. But the benefit of this approach does not lie in the stanzas themselves, but in identifying the breakpoint between stanzas, that could indicate an interesting shift in the species' life-cycle.…”

“…Concerning A. brasiliensis, the breakpoint (11.6) is the size estimated by Fávaro et al (2003) for 100% of the females at sexual maturity in the Paranaguá estuary. While this information is already available, the key point here is to identify whether the reproductive cycle is imprinted in the growth patterns of fish (Bervian et al 2006, Fontoura et al 2010, Oliveira et al 2011.…”

“…The practice of parental care, as it is the case for Anableps anableps (Linnaeus, 1758 -Anablepidae) and Hoplia gr. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794 -Erythrinidae), justify the scarcity of their larvae in the planktonic catches (Prado et al 2006, Oliveira et al 2011). The opposite scenario, when only larvae were present, was also observed.…”
