Taxonomic review of Colombian Parodon (Characiformes: Parodontidae), with descriptions of three new species

Abstract: We review species of Parodon Valenciennes, 1850 from the Magdalena, Cauca, Orinoco, Amazonas, Atrato and CaribbeanGuajira River basins of Colombia using meristic and morphological characters. We recognize eight valid species, five previously described: P. apolinari Myers, from the Orinoco River basin; P. buckleyi Boulenger and P. pongoensis (Allen) from the upper Amazon; P. caliensis Boulenger, from the upper Cauca River drainage; and P. suborbitalis Valenciennes, from Lake Maracaibo basin. “…Geographic range his species is only known from the Tucuy River in the Lower Magdalena River drainage, a tributary to the Río Calenturitas (9°37'N, 73°17'W), in the Municipality of La Jagua de Ibirico, Cesar, Colombia, at an elevation of 117 meters (Londoño-Burbano et al 2011).
