Abstract: This study aims to characterize the spatial and seasonal distribution of the fish assemblage and evaluate the integrity of streams in a sustainable use area that includes integral protection conservation units in Distrito Federal, Central Brazil (Cerrado biome). For the study, 12 stretches of 8 streams were sampled in 2008 (dry season) and 2009 (wet season). For that evaluation was estimated the Physical Habitat Index (PHI), vegetation cover (VC), pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and conductivity. We recorded … Show more

“…Schneider et al (2011) found that P. harpagos occurred only in sites where the vegetation cover is less dense and the stream is wider, reinforcing the high adaptability in response to environment variation (Hahn et al, 2004). Higher phenotypic plasticity and opportunism may explain the dominance of these groups under deforested conditions , as also observed for K. moenkhausii in other studies in the region (Couto & de Aquino, 2011;Schneider et al, 2011). K. moenkhausii does not originate from the Alto Paraná basin and was introduced as a result of the impoundment of the Itaipu Dam in 1982, which connected Baixo (a lowland area) with Alto Paraná (a higher area), increasing the number of species inhabiting the Alto reach (Langeani et al, 2007).…”

“…The deforestation of the Cerrado can lead to species translocation, water quality deterioration and habitat fragmentation, thereby reducing fish diversity (Lorion & Kennedy, 2009;Ferreira et al, 2012a). Despite the high number of endemic species found in the streams of the Brazilian savannah (Buckup et al, 2007;Aquino et al, 2009;Couto & de Aquino, 2011), knowledge of the fish diversity of this habitat remains limited. Nevertheless, the streams in this region have been suffering from strong anthropogenic pressures, which have changed the structure and composition of the aquatic communities.…”

“…can be considered high, especially if evaluated some issues: (i) the number of species recorded for other water bodies with similar size in the Neotropics (Bertaco 2009, Couto & Aquino 2011, Marceniuk et al 2011, Oyakawa & Menezes 2011, Cetra et al 2012, Daga et al 2012, as well in other streams in the Paraná State (Araújo et al 2011, Delariva & Silva 2013, Gubiani et al 2010; (ii) the proportion of species registered herein represents 37.7% of the total number of species recorded for the Iguaçu River basin (106 spp. ), including those observed in the main channel of the river .…”
