Abstract: Rhamdiopsis krugi, a new troglobitic heptapterid catfish, is described from the caves of Chapada Diamantina, State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. This species, although frequently cited in the scientific literature along the last seventeen years, remained undescribed largely due to its uncertain phylogenetic affinities. The generic assignment of R. krugi was clouded largely by its high number of unusual morphological features (some related to cave life), for instance: absence of eyes and body pigmentation; pre… Show more

“…Rhamdiopsis krugi was described on the basis of samples from Poço Encantado (the type‐locality), Lapa do Bode and Natal Caves (Bockmann & Castro, ). The osteological and external autapomorphies described by these authors are also present in specimens from Canoa Quebrada Cave (M. E. Bichuette pers.…”

“…Emphasis must be given to the peculiar, widely exposed pseudotympanum. This is a most remarkable autapomorphy of R. krugi , probably involved in the enhancement of sound sensitivity (Bockmann & Castro, ) with low probability of homoplasy. These observations also support the presumed monophyly for the presently studied taxon.…”

“…Specimens were then transferred to a bone staining solution containing alizarin red (SIGMA T4799) and incubated for 20 h. Individuals were washed thereafter and dehydrated with increasing series of glycerol. Skeletal structures were analysed under stereoscope and identified and named according to Bockmann and Castro () and Faustino and Power (). Photos were taken with a Leica camera (EC3, firmware: 1.9.44) connected to a Leica stereoscope (M125) and processed using Leica LAS EZ 3.0.0 (Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany), imagej (Rasband, , v1.49) and photoshop cc (Adobe Systems, Inc., San Jose, CA) software.…”

“…Sua inclusão foi feita na revisão de 2011, após a descrição formal feita por Bockmann & Castro (2010). Nesta mesma revisão uma exceção foi concedida a outra espécie de Rhamdiopsis de cavernas do semiárido da Bahia, sendo incluída na categoria CR.…”
