Abstract: The present study described the variations in energy density from skeletal muscles of Loricariichthys platymetopon in relation to body size, sex, gonadal development stages, sampling site and habitat type (lotic, semi-lotic and lotic). Samplings were performed between June 2002 and August 2006 in points located in the upper Paraná River floodplain, Rosana Reservoir and Diamante Stream. The energy density from each muscle sample of 212 specimens was determined using an adiabatic calorimeter. The correlations be… Show more

“…A common ecological attribute among detritivores, particularly those with high population abundance such as L. platymetopon, is the expressive contribution to nutrient cycling (Moore et al 2004, Garcia & Benedito 2010. Besides, this species was regarded as an important prey in the diet of various piscivores in the Upper Paraná River (Hahn et al 2004), showing its ecological relevance as a link in the aquatic food chain.…”

“…The paramters of condition factor and energy density present different patterns of variation, suggesting that their values could indicate different physiological conditions. A significant correlation between these two parameters was not observed in the analysis of other species (Santos et al, 2006;Garcia & Benedito, 2010), suggesting the importance of jointly verifying the results from these two parameters, as complementary tools. Although both parameters are directly related to food, they do not always respond similarly to environmental variations.…”

“…main river channel, lakes or backwaters), rather than widely distributed along the flooded system. The effort to obtain a larger sample is due to the necessity of selecting only specimens in gonadal regeneration stage, in order to eliminate energy variations related to reproduction (Dourado & Benedito-Cecilio, 2005;Garcia & Benedito, 2010). Fishes were sampled with gillnets of different mesh sizes (3 to 16 cm).…”
