Abstract: In the present work, we determined the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous food items as well as seasonal and ontogenetic variation in the feeding habits of Phalloceros anisophallos from córrego Andorinha, Ilha Grande. Quantitative analysis, based on alimentary index (IA i ) and food volume (Vo), revealed that P. anisophallos fed on detritus, autochthonous algae (diatoms, unicellular and filamentous Chlorophyceae algae), autochthonous animals (aquatic insect larvae: Trichoptera, Chironomidae… Show more

“…Nossos resultados não evidenciaram diferenças relacionadas às estações seca e chuvosa, possivelmente pela ampla gama de itens alimentares consumidos pela espécie e pela constante disponibilidade de recursos, típica de ambientes tropicais (e.g. Mazzoni et al, 2010). Por outro lado, registramos alterações significativas para a dieta dos exemplares coletados em localidades com e sem cobertura vegetal.…”

Based on the analysis of 55 species' gut contents in the above studies, stream-dwelling fishes in Atlantic Rain Forest exhibit diverse feeding habits, and "omnivory" (i.e.…”

“…Studies on trophic ecology have revealed a dietary pattern for fish from Neotropical streams, where the diet is mainly based on allochthonous food resources (Casatti, 2002;Mazzoni et al, 2010a;Tófoli et al, 2010), with the maximum use of environmental resources (Brandão-Gonçalves et al, 2010;Rezende et al, 2011) and high trophic plasticity of the species (Lowe-McConnell, 1999;Abelha et al, 2001).…”

“…In these environments, seasonal variations in the diet of fish species are common, with a wider niche breadth during the rainy season; in the dry season, these species become more specialized in a subset of resources (Winemiller et al, 2008). Nevertheless, in some environments these differences may not exist because the food resources remain available throughout the year in sufficient amounts (Mazzoni et al, 2010a;Schneider et al, 2011).…”
