Abstract: Pareiorhaphis scutula, new species, is described from the headwaters of the rio Piracicaba, tributary to the upper rio Doce basin in the State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by having an unique autapomorphic feature: the abdominal surface from pectoral girdle to pelvic-fin insertions covered with small platelets imbedded in skin and irregularly scattered. This feature is not shared with any other Pareirhaphis species. Pareiorhaphis scutula is further c… Show more

“…The specimens collected were identified as Pareiorhaphis garbei according to the key of species proposed by Pereira and Reis (2002) and comparisons with diagnostic features of recently described congeners (Pereira 2005;Pereira et al 2007Pereira et al , 2010Pereira and Britto 2012), mainly due to the presence of lower lip pappilae decreasing in size toward the posterior border, simple unicuspid teeth without lateral cusp and nuptial males with pectoral-fin spines thickened and ornamented with long hyperthrofied odontodes. Its known distribution was assessed by consulting several data in the scientific literature (e. g. Bizerril and Primo 2001;Pereira and Reis 2002;Weber 2003;Pereira 2005;Buckup et al 2007;Lazzarotto et al 2007;Menezes et al 2007;Pereira and Brito 2008;Nascimento and Campos 2011; and major ichthyological collections such as Museu de Ciências and Tecnologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (MCP), the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ) and Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP) available for consults through the national system of information on ichthyological collections (SIBIP/NEODAT III, 2013).…”

Meristic and morphometric data for comparisons of Pareiorhaphis species in the diagnosis section are from Pereira & Reis (2002), Pereira (2005), Pereira et al (2007Pereira et al ( , 2010, , and . “…Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro currently comprises 21 nominal valid species of small to medium-sized suckermouth armored catfishes easily recognized by a series of derived features, including cheeks, opercle, and the exposed lateral process of the cleithrum of adult males covered with hypertrophied odontodes, and the lateroventral portion of preopercle deeply rugose due to the attachment of hypertrophied odontodes (Pereira et al, 2007(Pereira et al, , 2010. Species of Pareiorhaphis are almost completely restricted to rivers draining the Brazilian Shield, with the exception of P. regani (Giltay), which was described from a tributary of the rio Negro, in the Amazon basin.…”

“…Species of this genus exhibit a significant variation in body size, color pattern, nature of the pectoral girdle covering, shape of the head, and other morphometric and meristic traits. However, a common pattern related to the sexually dimorphic attributes associated with adult males is shared by all species of the genus and diagnoses Pareiorhaphis among all other neoplecostomines, namely the hypertrophied odontodes that cover most of the cheek, opercle, and exposed lateral process of the cleithrum (Pereira et al, 2007(Pereira et al, , 2010. The type locality of the new species is located in the rio Itacambiruçu, one of the main tributaries of the rio Jequitinhonha, a coastal drainage included in the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (Abell et al, 2008), which harbors high levels of fish endemism (Camelier, Zanata, 2014).…”
