Abstract: A new Astyanax species is described from several localities in the rio Negro, rio Solimões and lower rio Tapajós basins, Amazon basin, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all remaining characids by its unique color pattern consisting of the combination of presence of a conspicuous, narrow dark midlateral stripe, a well-developed vertically-elongated dark humeral spot, and upper caudal-fin lobe and middle caudal-fin rays dark, with a rounded clear ocellated spot present at anterior third of caudal-fin… Show more

“…Astyanax comprises more than 100 valid species and is one of the most specious incertae sedis genera recognized within the family Characidae (Marinho and Lima 2009). Several species of the genus Astyanax have already been genetically studied, mainly with a cytogenetic focus.…”

“…According to Eigenmann (1917Eigenmann ( , 1921, this genus is diagnosed by the presence of two series of teeth in the premaxilla: the first series with a variable number of teeth and the second series with usually five, crowns of premaxillary and mandibulary teeth usually ridged and denticulated, maxilla with 0-9 teeth, a complete lateral line, absence of a predorsal spine, and naked caudalfin. Most of these characters are broadly distributed among characids, evidencing that a definition of the genus is necessary (Marinho, Lima, 2009;Mirande et al, 2004Mirande et al, , 2006aMirande et al, , 2007. As currently defined, Astyanax is the most diverse genus of Characidae and also the most widely distributed, inhabiting from Texas, with A. mexicanus (De Filippi), to the north of Argentine Patagonia, with A. pampa Casciotta, Almirón & Azpelicueta (Casciotta et al, 2005;Pérez, 2008).…”

“…Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 belongs to a fish group that is widely distributed across Central and South America, representing one of the dominant taxa among the freshwater fishes of the region, with about 140 species distributed in practically every freshwater environment in the Neotropical region (Marinho & Lima, 2009;Eschmeyer, 2013). This group is of particular interest in evolutionary studies aiming the elucidation of interrelations between species (Vicari et al, 2008a).…”
