Abstract: A new species of Metynnis is described from the rio Cuiabá and rio Manso drainages, in the upper rio Paraguay basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. This laterally compressed species, which rarely exceeds 140 mm in SL, is readily distinguished from other members of the genus Metynnis by having 100-110 lateral-line scales, 48-56 rows of scales above the lateral line, 32-36 circumpeduncular scales, 22-24 gill rakers, 38 vertebrae, singular color pattern, and relatively smaller snout, width, and head length.Uma nova e… Show more

“…Females only possess notable coloration on the anterior anal-fin rays, which are orange to light red. Prolongation of anterior dorsal-fin rays, which is very common in other Metynnis species (e.g., Metynnis cuiaba Pavanelli et al, 2009) was not observed either in males or females of M. melanogrammus.…”

“…There are 28 nominal species and only around half of them are recognized as valid. The elevated number of synonyms is probably a consequence of the enormous variability of body shape and color pattern, which in turn are highly influenced by ontogeny and sexual dimorphism (Zarske & Géry, 1999;Jégu, 2003;Pavanelli et al, 2009;Ota et al, 2013). As a consequence, there is little information about the phylogenetic relationships among species of Metynnis.…”

“…The stress coloration is an independent color trait controlled by some unknown genetic-hormonal Many species have been described recently in the rio Cuiabá basin. Shibatta & Pavanelli (2005) described Batrochoglanis melanurus from the rio Cancela; Carvalho et al (2008) described Hyphessobrycon rutiliflavidus from córrego Pipa; Graça et al (2008) described Characidium nupelia from tributaries to the rio Cuiabá and; Pavanelli et al (2009) described Metynnis cuiaba from the drainages of the rios Cuiabá and Manso. The discovery of H. peckoltoides reinforces the upper rio Paraguay basin as a region of undescribed diversity, and the area deserves more survey efforts in the headwater streams and also in the main river channels.…”
