A new species of sexually dimorphic Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Doce basin, Brazil

Abstract: Pareiorhaphis nasuta, a new neoplecostomine catfish of the family Loricariidae is described. The species was collected from headwaters of the rio Matipó, tributary of the upper rio Doce basin in State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The new species is readily diagnosed from all remaining congeners by the longer snout and by the smaller orbital diameter. The new species is the first representative of the genus Pareiorhaphis discovered in the rio Doce basin, thus expanding its geographic distribution. A phylogenetic di… Show more

“…Two species of Pareiorhaphis were reported previously from the Rio Doce basin: Pareiorhaphis nasuta and P. scutula (Pereira et al, 2007(Pereira et al, , 2010. With the recognition that Pareiorhaphis proskynita is distinct, the genus Pareiorhaphis now contains three species in the Rio Doce basin.…”

“…Counts of plates, rays and dentary and premaxillary teeth were also performed under the scope. Dermal plate counts followed the schemes of serial homology and terminology proposed by Schaefer (1997), and the morphometric measurements are those described by Pereira et al 2007 with the addition of prepelvic length (measured from the snout tip to the pelvic-fin origin), dorsal-fin base length (measured from the dorsal-fin origin to the end of the dorsal-fin base), pectoral-pelvic distance (measured from the pectoral-fin origin to pelvic-fin origin), pelvic-anal distance (measured from the pelvic-fin origin to anal-fin origin), internareal distance (measured transversely between the inner posterior margins of the nares), and prenasal length (measured from the snout tip to the anterior margin of the naris). Morphometric measures were treated as percents of standard length (SL), except for subunits of the cephalic region, treated as percents of head length (HL).…”
