Blockage of migration routes by dam construction: can migratory fish find alternative routes?

Abstract: The present study explored the interaction between the upriver migration of fish and the blockage of their migration routes by dam construction. Specifically, we studied (i) the capacity of migratory fish to locate alternative routes in the presence of an obstacle, and (ii) the behavior of the fish after they were artificially transferred to the reservoir. With the use of the markrecapture technique (tagging), the study was carried out near Porto Primavera Dam (UHE Engenheiro Sérgio Motta) between 1994 and 199… Show more

“…This low level of abundance was consistent throughout the year and contrasted strongly with the trend observed below the dam, where abundance peaked during the rainy months (the period of reproductive migration, known as piracema). The scarcity of migratory species in the inner zones of impoundments has been reported by previous studies (Agostinho et al, 2007b;Antonio et al, 2007;Agostinho et al, 2011). It is probable that this scarcity is related to the rheophilic behavior of Neotropical fish, which are typically adapted to live in riverine environments and associated habitats (Gomes & Miranda, 2001).…”

“…However, in the regions upriver, these habitats are limited and of dubious adequacy (Agostinho et al, 2007a). Mark-recapture studies conducted in this region showed that migratory fish concentrated near the dam before the installation of the passage mechanisms were able to return to the first tributaries downstream and ascend them (Antonio et al, 2007).…”

“…The presence of large undammed tributaries, such as the Ivinheima, in the floodplain ensures spawning success and the maintenance of migratory species in the area (Agostinho et al, 2007a;Antonio et al, 2007). The increase in larvae density of long-distance migratory species in the Ivinheima River demonstrates the importance of this river to spawning in the upper Paraná River floodplain Nakatani et al, 1997;Sanches et al, 2006).…”
