Fish assemblage structure in tributaries of the Meia Ponte River, Goiás, Brazil

Abstract: This study was conducted in the Meia Ponte River basin, which is located in the Cerrado biome. The objective was to describe the structure of fish assemblages and to evaluate the results with the regard to the position of the tributaries (sampling stations) along the basin. This basin drains 35 municipalities of Goiás State. Springs of the Meia Ponte are located in the district of Itauçu (GO), in the Serra dos Brandões. Two sampling were conducted, one in the rainy season (March/2001) and another in the dry se… Show more

“…Exploration of fish assemblages along a short spatial scale in the uppermost part of the Paraná River also demonstrated a great ichthyofauna heterogeneity (Fialho et al, 2007). In our study, with only four species, the similarity percentage analysis was able to explain almost 60% of the total dissimilarity between any pair of lakes.…”

“…Rivers are highly variable environments, and are periodically subjected to unpredictable oscillations of their physical and chemical habitat (e.g., flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity), and these fluctuations have been shown to affect the richness and structure of river fish assemblages (Tejerina-Garro et al, 2005). However, in the Neotropical regions alternating high and low water seasons influence habitat (Poff et al, 1997) and fish assemblages (Mérona & Gascuel, 1993) inclusive of the Meia Ponte River tributaries (Fialho et al, 2007). In this case, seasonality can be seen as a key factor switching on/off other environmental variables and increasing or inhibiting environmental modifications (Agostinho & Zalewski, 1995).…”

“…Is worthwhile to mention some studies conducted in the States of Goiás (Benedito-Cecilio et al, 2004;Fialho et al, 2007;Araújo & Tejerina-Garro, 2007) and Mato Grosso do Sul (Súarez, 2008;Súarez & Lima-Júnior, 2009). In the Distrito Federal should be emphasized the studies of Viana (1989), Ribeiro (1994), and Aquino et al (2009).…”
