Reproductive success and female preference in the amazonian cichlid angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare (Lichtenstein, 1823)

Abstract: The angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare is a cichlid native to the Amazon Basin of Brazil and is exported as an ornamental fish. In this study the importance of the experience and previous reproductive success of males in mate selection was investigated. In order to investigate reproductive experience, six pairs of males (experienced and inexperienced) and six females were used. Males were placed in an aquarium, where one female was released. Mate selection was verified by the time spent by a female near one of t… Show more

“…menezesi are larger than the females, and the length-weight relationship in both sexes of this species shows isometric growth [ 11 ]. Generally, male cichlids are larger and heavier than females, as a consequence of behavioral evolution in pair formation and parental care, which increases their reproductive success [ 5 , 15 , 25 , 27 29 ].…”

“…The males attained significantly higher body weights than females (t = -3.902; p = 0.001). Larger males generally have an advantage in choosing the female to spawn, win fights over territories and have better quality spawning territories (Cacho et al, 2006). The total weight-length equation of males was Wt=0.0108Lt 3.172 with r = 0.9826 and of females was Wt=0.0122Lt 3.0114 with r = 0.9608 (Figure 3).…”

“…They are serially monogamous, that is, pairs bond and biparental care takes place for each breeding; after that, male and female can bond to different partners (Cacho et al ., 2007). The reproductive repertoire of P. scalare encompasses social rank organization and territory establishment, courtship, mate choice, spawning and brood care ( e.g ., Bergmann, 1968; Cacho et al ., 1999, 2006; Chien, 1973; Chien & Salmon, 1972; Sladden, 1937; Yamamoto et al ., 1999).…”
