Feeding habit of Eigenmannia trilineata Lopez & Castello, 1966 (Teleostei: Sternopygidae) of Parque Estadual de Itapuã, RS, Brazil

Abstract: This study aims to describe the feeding habits of a population of the weakly electric fish Eigenmannia trilineata from Southern Brazil through the monthly frequency variation of replection (RI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes, condition factor (CF) and dietary analysis of the species, besides the comparison of the results with abiotic factors. We collected 428 specimens from June/2002 to May/2003 with a dip net and electric fish detector. Stomach contents were analyzed using three measurements: frequency of oc… Show more

“…Therefore, the considerably low value of intestinal quotient corroborates with the definition of an invertivorous feeding habit for B. bombilla. The same feeding habit was described for the hypopomids Brachyhypopomus occidentalis and Microsternarchus bilineatus by Arrington et al (2002), and feeding on insects has been reported for species of the families Sternopygidae as well (Soares 1979;Mérigoux and Ponton 1998;Giora et al 2005).…”

“…Seasonal reproductive cycle, with no breeding or gonad development during winter months, has been documented by many authors for gymnotiform (Silva et al 2003;Quintana et al 2004;Giora et al 2005;Cognato and Fialho 2006;Schaan, et al 2009) and non-gymnotiform species inhabiting freshwater habitats in southern South America (Hartz et al 1999;Azevedo et al 2000;Querol et al 2002;Gonçalves et al 2005;Lampert et al 2007). However, a long period of dormancy, when an entire population remained buried and without any feeding activity, has never been reported for a gymnotiform or any other freshwater fish from that geographic region.…”

“…Os gimnotiformes encontrados na lagoa Negra são exemplos de organismos que dependem diretamente deste tipo de vegetação para sua sobrevivência. Eigenmannia trilineata, por exemplo, é encontrada em cardumes sob estas plantas, as quais são comprovadamente utilizadas na dieta da espécie, assim como os invertebrados que se associam às suas raízes (GIORA et al, 2005 (UIEDA, 1984).…”
