An albino armored catfish Schizolecis guntheri (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from an Atlantic Forest coastal basin

Abstract: We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly.Relatamos aqui o albinismo em um espécime de Schizolecis guntheri capturado no rio Bonito na bacia do rio Macaé, estado do Rio de Janeiro. A hipótese do albinismo ser mais comum em peixes com hábitos cr… Show more

“…1986;Ueda et al 2007;Jeffery 2009) and marine fishes (Béarez 2002;Simon et al 2009;Piorski and Nunes 2010). Some cases of total or partial albinism in Siluriformes have been reported, e.g., Ictalurus punctatus (Westerman and Birge 1978), Trichomycterus itacarambiensis (Trajano 1997), Rhamdella minuta (Sazima and Pombal-Jr. 1986) Schizolecis guntheri (Brito and Caramaschi 2005), Ameiurus catus (Britton and Davies 2006) and Phreatobius cisternarum (Shibatta et al 2007). Frequently captured albino fish are only reported in aquarium magazines and local newspapers (Sazima and Pombal-Jr. 1986).…”

“…A completely albino individual is characterized by pinkish or yellowish color and pink or red eyes (e.g., Sazima & Pombal-Jr. 1986;Oliveira & Foresti 1996;Silva et al 2013). Currently, a small number of cases of complete albinism is recorded for Neotropical freshwater fishes, mostly in epigeal habitats (e.g., del Barco & Panattieri 1980;Oliveira & Foresti 1996;Brito & Caramaschi 2005;Silva et al 2013), although albinism is known in hypogeal habitats as well (Carvalho & de Pinna 1986). To date, reports of complete albinos among trichomycterid catfishes remain restricted to the cave-dwelling Trichomycterus itacarambiensis Trajano & de Pinna, 1996 (Carvalho & de Pinna 1986;Trajano 1997).…”
