Comparative dietary analysis of two populations of Mimagoniates rheocharis (Characidae: Glandulocaudinae) from two streams of Southern Brazil

Abstract: The diet of two populations of Mimagoniates rheocharis, from two freshwater streams of the rio Tramandaí, northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are described and compared. The specimens were collected monthly from January 1998 to March 1999, with dip nets and seine nets and preserved in 10% formalin. In laboratory, the standard length of each specimen was measured. The stomachs were removed and dissected for identification of the alimentary items. The data were analyzed using the frequency of occurrence, per… Show more

“…Even though few stomachs of larger individuals were analyzed, we believe that these results confirm the fact that ontogenetic variations in feeding habits occur widely among omnivorous Atlantic rainforest stream fishes, observations also made by Vitule & Aranha (2002), Dufech et al (2003), Barreto & Aranha (2006), Abilhoa et al (2007), and Vitule et al (2008).…”

“…This material may represent dietary items (Sabino & Castro 1990, Dufech et al 2003, Tófoli et al 2010, as recorded in the present study, or it may act indirectly by providing habitats for the aquatic invertebrates that represent a dietary resource for the fishes, such as floating logs and submerged leaf litter (Pusey & Arthington 2003).…”
