Technetium-99m-labeled deoxynivalenol from Fusarium mycotoxin alters organ toxicity in BALB/c mice by oral and intravenous route

Abstract: Abstract:The toxicity of deoxynivalenol, both intravenously and orally, was investigated in male and female BALB/c mice. Technetium-99m ( 99m Tc)-labeled deoxynivalenol was administered to mice by tail vein injection and orally dosed. Distribution of labeled deoxynivalenol at 26 hours was monitored by gammascintigraphy. In the evaluated organs, the accumulation of radioactive deoxynivalenol was correlated with the amount of radioactivity. In addition, the toxicity of deoxynivalenol was measured by biochemical … Show more

“…Alternatively, the addition of LGG to DON improved kidney cell damage and partially restored normal kidney morphology. Tubule dilatation and cellular vacuolization were observed after intravenous administration of DON in mice, 36 and our research results were in agreement with it. To investigate the effect of DON on kidney function, the serum levels of BUN, CREA, ALB, GLOB and GLU were measured.…”

“…It should be taken into account that dry food is currently used as main component of pet feeding for most of their lives. It means that a long-term intake of medium or high doses of mycotoxins in pet foods may entail adverse health effects, because these compounds are accumulated in animals’ tissues [77]. It is not clear yet how the health is affected by mycotoxins’ co-occurrence.…”

“…A study from Chattopadhyay et al [ 30 ] has shown that mycotoxins are deposited in the liver and kidney of BALB/c mice, causing damage and increased relative weight in these organs. However, in this study, we did not observe any significant effect of DON and ZEN on organ weight, but noticed small injuries in the kidneys of DON and ZEN dietary groups.…”
