Anti-inflammatory activity of the apolar extract from the seaweed Galaxaura marginata (Rhodophyta, Nemaliales)

Abstract: The red seaweed Galaxaura marginata (Ellis & Solander) Lamouroux, well known by the antibacterial activity of its polar extract and the cytotoxic activity of its oxygenated desmosterol, showed anti-inflammatory action in its apolar fraction. Topical anti-inflammatory activity was observed in samples collected at São Sebastião channel, northern littoral of São Paulo State, Brazil. The apolar extract and its fractions obtained through Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) reduced the topical inflammation produced by c… Show more

“…Ethanol:acetic acid extract (1mg/ear) of Galerina marginata was reported to cause 95±0.5% reduction of mouse ear edema with its 4 Hexane-thin layer chromatography (TLC) fractions inhibited 55, 75, 100, and 100%. EC 50 of ethanol:acetic extract was reached at 0.31mg/ear and its anti-inflammatory activity was associated to inhibition of PLA 2 (Rozas and Freitas, 2007).…”
