Abstract: Snake antivenom, an expensive animal product, is presently the only effective treatment for the consequences of snakebite. In Latin America, antivenoms are mainly produced by public institutions with frequent shortages of the necessary supply. Here, we present an economical analysis of the factors affecting production cost, assuming a basic processing batch of 100 L hyperimmune plasma. Three annual production volumes were considered for two typical production technologies. The components of cost were classifie… Show more

“…Unfortunately the incorporation of refined purification techniques to antivenom production process and others commercials factors have carried on an important cost increase, thereby causing an strong antivenom shortage specially in the poorest countries (25,(86)(87)(88)(89). The best solution includes best quality antivenoms at an affordable cost (20,22).…”

“…Purification of immunoglobulins by caprylic acid precipitation of non-IgG plasma proteins, presently offers a cost-effective alternative, which some laboratories have already adopted or are developing (12,20). The method fabricates a product with a relatively high purity in one step, which makes it suitable as a standalone process, or as the initial step of a purification chain (12,21).…”

“…Snake antivenom, a type serum, is currently the only effective product for treating the consequences of snakebites, a serious public health problem in many tropical and subtropical countries (3,(11)(12)(13)(14). Currently, commercial antivenom is available to neutralize the effects of snake envenomation (3,15).…”

“…They used the capacity of CA to precipitate most plasma proteins–essentially albumin–except the immunoglobulin fraction. Because of the simplicity of the method and the good product purity achieved, institutions devoted to antivenom production have adopted or are implementing this technology 2,10–12 to replace or complement the traditional process based on precipitation with ammonium sulfate 13.…”
