Abstract: We studied and compared the effects of chloramphenicol antibiotic and garlic (Allium sativum), used as immunostimulants and growth promoters, on some physiological parameters, growth performance, survival rate, and bacteriological characteristics of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish (7±1g/fish) were assigned to eight treatments, with three replicates each. Treatment groups had a different level of Allium sativum (10, 20, 30, and 40g/kg diet) and chloramphenicol (15, 30, and 45mg/kg diet) added to thei… Show more

“…The tissues of C. gariepinus were individually softened and put into sterile bottles containing sterilized distilled water and homogenized (Shalaby et al, 2006). Serial dilution was adopted and 1ml each from 10-1 to 10-6 dilution factors were dispersed into Petri dishes that were correctly labeled and molten sterilized medium was poured aseptically into Petri dish.…”

“…Five grammes (5g) representative sample was obtained aseptically from the loin muscle of the smoked catfish, Clarias gariepinus and were separately macerated and put into sterile capped test tube containing sterilized peptone water and homogenized (Shalaby et al, 2006). Serial dilution was carried out and 1ml each from 10 -1 to 10 -6 dilution factors were dispensed into Petri dishes that were appropriately labelled and molten sterile medium (MacConky agar for total viable count) was poured aseptically into each Petri dish.…”

“…The addition of 0.5% of Massa medicata, Crataegi fructus, Artemisia capillaries or Cnidium officinale to the diet led to better use of lipids in stress and recovery of Pagrus major (Ji et al, 2009). The use of the oregano essential oil (Origanum heracleoticum) as a supplement in the food improved growth, antioxidant status and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) (Zheng et al, 2009) and the extract of Allium sativum in the diet also promoted growth and reduced mortality rate of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila (Shalaby et al, 2006).…”
