Abstract: The epidemiological data on snakebites in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, is scarce. This accounts for the difficulties in helping the victims. Hence, to obtain the clinical and epidemic profile of the snakebite accidents in Paraíba, we studied the number of cases recorded in this state between January 1995 and December 2000. The data was collected from these sources: Center for Toxicological Assistance

“…This practice is extremely important for the identification of the agent of the accident and to determine antivenom use 11,[15][16][17][18][19][20] . Male individuals between 11 and 30 years-old are the most frequent victims of bothropic and bothropoidic accidents in Brazil 2,19,21 , corroborating the results of the present study. Such a high occurrence of bothropic and bothropoidic accidents in male individuals is probably explained by the fact that men work in rural areas more frequently than women, whether for work reasons or leisure 20,22 .…”

“…Discussion of this index is of some interest, however the fact that the database of this work was initially developed some years ago means underreporting is likely to be high and data omission in the archives of the notification units of this state is also likely to have occurred 2,6 . We believe the values are much higher, taking into account the variables and considering that the south and southeast regions of Brazil are much better organized concerning the information systems and health services and, therefore, present higher numbers 12,14 .…”

“…These are the three Understanding the diversity and life-history traits of venomous snakes is imperative to prevent accidents that may have tragic consequences for both humans and snakes (Cardoso et al 2003). Most snake bites in Paraíba State are attributed to Bothrops (46%), Crotalus (10%) and Micrurus (1.7%) (Albuquerque et al 2005) with Rio Tinto being the city with the second highest number of snake bites from Bothrops in the state (Albuquerque et al 2004). However, even these records may be an underestimate because patients were unable to identify the snake species or genus in at least 30% of cases (Albuquerque et al 2005).…”
